Protecting Your Investment: The Truth About Marble & Stone
If you have chosen natural stone — whether it is Carrara marble in the bathroom, Travertine floors, or a Granite island—you have invested in the character of your home. Stone is timeless, beautiful, and incredibly durable. But it is also chemically vulnerable.
One of the most common mistakes we see in high-end home maintenance is the use of incorrect “natural” cleaners.
The “Natural” Trap
There is a prevailing myth that cleaning with vinegar or lemon juice is the safest, most eco-friendly option for your home. While this may be true for a ceramic sink, it is disastrous for natural stone.
Vinegar and citrus are acidic. When acid touches calcium-based stones (like marble, travertine, or limestone), it causes a chemical reaction called etching. This isn’t a stain you can wipe off; it is a physical burn on the surface of the stone that looks like a dull, rough water spot.
Our Protocol: The pH Balance
At AB Signature Cleaning, we strictly adhere to a pH-neutral protocol for all stone surfaces.
- Chemistry Matters: We use specialized, pH-neutral cleaners that lift dirt without attacking the sealant or the stone itself.
- Microfiber Only: Stone scratches easily. We use fresh, high-grade microfiber cloths to trap grit and dust, preventing the “sandpaper effect” that occurs with rougher rags.
- Immediate Drying: Calgarian water is hard. Leaving water to air-dry on dark granite or marble often leaves mineral deposits. We buff surfaces dry to ensure a streak-free shine that preserves the stone’s depth.
The Takeaway
Your stone surfaces were designed to last a lifetime. Our job is to ensure they age gracefully, not prematurely. If you aren’t sure if your current cleaner is safe, check the label. If it says “citrus,” “vinegar,” or has a low pH, keep it far away from your stone.
